The Badge Explained

Badge Origins

The badge is an accessory, often containing the insignia of an organisation, which is presented or displayed to indicate some feat of service, a special accomplishment, a symbol of authority granted by taking an oath or as a simple means of identification. They are also used in advertising, publicity, and branding purposes.

The common Police badges date back to medieval times when knights wore a coat of arms representing their allegiances and loyalty.

Civic Defence Policing The Badge Explained

Why does the Civic Defence Policing badge have 7 points?

The seven points were decided on to represent the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Virtue, Divinity, Prudence, Fortitude, Honour, Glory and Praising God.

The seven-pointed star historically is worn over the left breast ostensibly implying that the star is meant to protect the most vulnerable part of the human body; the heart.

Why does the badge have a crown?

Although the crown that adorns the top of our badge is not an ‘official’ Royal crown, it does represent our commitment as citizens to our Queen and Country and forms part of our mandate to ‘keep the Queens peace’, when carrying out our ‘Civic Policing’ duties.

What does the blue band represent?

The blue band around the edge of the circle represents our commitment to supporting the police service, ‘The Thin Blue Line’.

What do the symbols on the badge mean?

The images on the badge are a pair of handcuffs (on the left), symbolising arrest (power of citizens arrest) taking those who commit a crime against the community into custody.

The lines (in the middle) represent areas of patrol responsibility such as Waterways, Roads and Railways and property.

The image of the Castle, Tower or Keep (on the right) represents protection, strength and security of the property.

The lines running horizontally above and below the images represent castle walls binding all the elements together, illustrating the protection of boundaries and keeping communities safe within.

Why the name Civic Defence Policing?

The company name was formed in recognition of a person’s ‘Civic Duty’ and ‘Civic Right’ to ‘Defend’ and protect their local communities.

The word ‘Policing’ is the function that we carry out as part of our ‘Civic Duty’ to our clients and local communities.
